When seriously wounded, the shadar-kai feels the pull of the Shadowfell on their soul, threatening to reclaim it. This experience is traumatic and draining on the Shadar-kai and leaves them exhausted for a while. After being wounded in PVP, you are also exhausted for 6 hours.
