Undead

(Link to Wikis in Race Name)

Unlife is nothing to envy: while they may have more time than they had in life, it holds none of life’s sweetness. The lilies of the field do not smell, food has no taste, and even friendship itself which is a rare and valuable commodity is more difficult to come by in unlife, by an order of magnitude, than it was in life.

Undead are once-living creatures brought to a horrifying state of undeath through the practice of necromantic magic or some unholy curse.  They include walking corpses, such as zombies, as well as bodiless spirits, such as ghosts and specters.  From shambling skeletons to the arch-lich Vecna himself – they are one of the largest, most diverse, and terrifying types of monsters that roam the planes.

Being as they were extremely resilient to a number of effects and substances that were extremely harmful to the living, the afterlife wouldn’t seem all that bad to a select few that enjoyed these perks.  The Undead are immune to all mind-affecting effects, poison sleep effects, paralysis, stunning, disease, and death effects.  In addition, it was not possible to drain their life force in any manner.  With the resilience, special powers, and an ageless lifespan that the Undead have, it’s no wonder that Necromancers and the like want this power under them, or even going so far as giving their life up for a life in death.

Ghast

Ghasts look a lot like they did in life. Their state of decay was the primary identifier. Regardless, due to reanimations, the ghast has a paler, greyer tone of the skin. Sunken eyes and bony fingers. It has the stench of death and looks rigid in its movements. They resembled very closely their undead cousin, except perhaps being just a bit more slender and ghost-like. The stench of death and rot lingered around their undead forms, being terrible enough to cause nausea, retching, and in rare cases even paralyzation. Ghasts often laired with others of their own kind or acted as the leaders of a group of normal ghouls.

Reborn

Death isn’t always the end. The reborn exemplify this, being individuals who have died yet, somehow, still live. Some reborn exhibit the scars of fatal fates, their ashen flesh, missing limbs, or bloodless veins making it clear that they’ve been touched by death. Other reborn are marvels of magic or science, being stitched together from disparate beings or bearing mysterious minds in manufactured bodies. Whatever their origins, reborn know a new life and seek experiences and answers all their own.

Wight

Wights were evil undead creatures brought back to un-life by their vanity, evil deeds, and desires. Upon the end of their mortal lives, the dying spirits reached out to Orcus or another evil deity, receiving undeath in exchange for spending eternity, hating and trying to destroy all living beings. Retaining their personalities and memories in the undeath, they possessed free will at the same time as they were tasked to perform the bidding of the evil powers that brought them back.
